Oonagh Murphy

Oonagh Murphy is a theatre director, writer and participatory artist working across various forms in professional and community-based contexts. As a stage director, she has worked with companies such as Druid, the Gate, the Abbey Theatre, Donmar Warehouse and the Playful Productions. She is passionate about amplifying diverse voices and staging stories that have previously existed on the margins. She collaborates closely with writers creating new work – most recently, Karen Cogan (DRIP FEED for Fishamble and Soho Theatre) and Cristín Kehoe (SHELTER for Druid Theatre Company). Her production of THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD reimagined Synge’s classic from a feminist perspective for a contemporary audience, headlining Dublin Theatre Festival at the Gaiety Theatre. In 2018, she co-wrote and directed a new work, THE MOUTH OF A SHARK, a theatrical concept album which counterpointed stories of LGBT asylum seekers arriving in Ireland, with the experiences of queer Irish people forced to leave home in decades past. She is now in the process of developing this show as an experimental film project.
